Welcome to my list (or at least the beginning of it) of the Top 25 Movies of my Lifetime (the past 26-27 years). Each week for the next 25 weeks I will release and review another movie from this list until it is complete.
I have put considerable thought into compiling this list. I have reviewed the AFI top 100 movies of all time, the most rented movies on Netflix, employee selections at the local video store, Academy award nominees during this time period, and of course, polled some of my friends. through this process, I have come up with my favorite 25 movies of the past 25 years.
Obviously, this is no definitive list. It is reflective solely of my personal opinion and what I personally look for in a movie. As everyone has different requirements for what makes a movie great, this list is probably unique to me, and you may not agree with many of the choices I have made.
through a discussion with my mother -which began when she gave me her list of her top 25 which had only three in common with mine – I have isolated many of the criteria that I use to judge a movie. While my mother seemed to look mostly for entertainment – she says she goes to the movies to have fun – my selections are chosen more based on how much the movie makes you think. I see media as a vehicle for delivering social messages about the human condition or for challenging our beliefs about something. I want a movie to be provocative and have a level of meaning beyond the surface entertainment. Of course, I also like a movie to be exciting or to include unforeseen plot twists, but these are secondary criteria when determining whether a movie is great or not. The main thing I look for is “does this movie deliver a meaningful message that could impact the lives of its viewers”?
if you follow the unveiling of this list you will find that most of the movies I present will fit this profile. However, some movies are just so well done that they can made it onto the list by virtue of a great combination of acting, directing, story and cinematography.
okay, I look forward to beginning this. The first review will be released tomorrow (Monday April 25).
